2006 Lombardi Award Semifinalists Announced

Houston, TX — (Sports Network) - Penn State linebacker Paul Posluszny and Michigan defensive end LaMarr Woodley are among the semifinalists for the 37th annual Rotary Lombardi Award. The award is given each year to the top lineman or linebacker in college football and will be announced on December 6th.Posluszny, who was a finalist for the award last year, and Woodley are joined by linebackers Buster Davis of Florida State and Patrick Willis of Mississippi, offensive tackle Joe Thomas of Wisconsin, who was also a nominee last year, Justin Blalock of Texas and Dan Mozes of West Virginia, along with defensive ends Gaines Adams of Clemson, Mkristo Bruce of Washington State, Quentin Moses of Georgia, and Brian Smith of Missouri. Defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock of Ohio State rounds out the list. All 12 players are playing their senior seasons. Posluszny leads the Nittany Lions defense with 57 tackles (34 solo) in seven games so far this season. Woodley, meanwhile, has posted seven sacks and ten tackles for losses for the Wolverines. The leader in the middle of the Seminoles defense, Davis has already tallied 57 tackles (30 solo) in six games. Willis leads the SEC with an average of 10.43 tackles per game for the Ole Miss defense. Thomas was a pre-season All-American and is the linchpin of a Badger attack that has averaged almost 34 points per contest. Blalock anchors a line for a Longhorns team that is the second highest scoring team in NCAA football this year. Mozes centers a line for the undefeated Mountaineers that leads the nation with an average of 328 rushing yards per game. Adams holds the top spot in the ACC in sacks with 7 1/2 for the Tigers, while Bruce currently leads the nation with 10, also posting 29 solo tackles for the Cougars. Moses, the pre-season SEC Defensive Player of the Year, has 21 tackles for the Bulldogs. Smith has registered 7 1/2 sacks, tied for fifth in the country, and also has 8 1/2 tackles for a loss. Pitcock has recorded seven sacks for the top-ranked Buckeyes.
