The MVP: A Quality Quarterback is a Must Have

HenigAt this point in the season you either have it or you don’t, and for many teams with high expectations when the season began that is a harsh reality. With that in mind, let me ask a question. What is the number one reason most teams don’t meet their expectations? In my opinion, they don’t have a quarterback. For the most part the teams that succeed have a good leader under center.

Just look at the problems State has had this year. We start with Henig. He gets hurt the in the second quarter of the SC game. Rutland comes in and is horrific. After a quarter and a half of producing no offense in the Tulane game we put Conner in. We are immediately a different team. I truely believe had we put in Conner when Henig got hurt we would have beaten South Carolina.

Just look at the Dallas Cowboys. They have gone through 9 quarterbacks since Troy Aikmen retired. There offense and team has been on the slide the entire time. Instead picking a quarterback in the draft they have sat back and watched as other teams in their division have left them behind. Bledsoe was a good quarterback in his prime and Romo hasn’t proved anything. The quarterback postition will keep them out of the playoffs this year.

Another prime example is the Georgia Bulldogs. Their freshman quarterback practically gave us the game last week. If we hadn’t made our own mistakes at the quarterback position we could have wrapped that one in maroon and white.

My point, we have to focus on recruiting a quarterback. During Coach Crooms tenure we haven’t signed a single one.
