STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) - Jamall Edmondson scored 11 of his career-high 15 points in the second half to lead Mississippi State to a 68-63 victory over Arkansas State on Monday night.
Arkansas State tied it at 60 with 2:09 to play on a free throw by Dereke Tipler.
Piotr Stelmach then gave the Bulldogs the lead for good 20 seconds later with a rare 3-pointer from the top of the key.
Edmondson hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory for youthful Mississippi State.
Freshman Jamont Gordon had 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting to lead the Bulldogs (2-0), who are replacing their top six scorers from last year’s team which reached the second round of the NCAA tournament.
Gordon had the highest-scoring night by a Mississippi State freshman since Mario Austin had 17 in February 2001.
Isaac Wells had 19 points to lead Arkansas State (1-1). Jim Jones had 13 and Tipler added 12 for the Indians.
Mississippi State, which is playing seven games in a 15-day span, hasn’t lost to Arkansas State since 1955.
The Indians shot just 23 percent from 3-point range, but the Bulldogs weren’t much better, making 25 percent of their attempts from beyond the arc.
