The Charlotte 49ers played one of the most interesting halves of basketball in their history Wednesday night.

It was the first half of their 53-38 loss to Mississippi State, and it was interesting because it was so irreparably, incredibly awful.

Charlotte scored nine points. Nine!!

In the shot-clock era, how do you score nine points?

It’s only possible if you shoot 11.5 percent — 3-for-26. Even then, you can stay out of double digits only if you also miss seven of your nine free throws and turn the ball over 12 times.

The 49ers managed all that. It was an offensive first half at Halton Arena, and I mean that in the same way a dead skunk is offensive.
